Stafford does it again
Bywell Shooting Ground once again played host to the annual Perazzi Grand Prix. With over 280 competitors and a prize fund of £15,000, it promised to be a great weekend of DTL Shooting.
John Stafford led all the way to take high gun of the event. Posting a 100/296 after day one with Darren Newton very close behind on 99/295, Paul Chaplow and M Milne were battling it out for third place after both scoring 99/294. All being in AA Class, which meant it, was all to play for on Sunday.
Andrew Lazenby and Tobie De Wet were left tying in first place in A Class after they both posted a 100/293. DJ Alford was clear winner after day one in B Class with his 99/291. With D Evans and P Hughs charging after him with 98/288 & 98/286 retrospectively. Eley’s Thomas Atinza was top of the board in C Class on 97/284. With N Phillipo and WJ Spence trying hard to catch him with their 97/279.
Twenty-One ladies battled for the Gold silver & Bronze Medals. Andrea Swatts took the lead after the first day on 97/285, Emma Wheelldon however was hot on her heels with 97/284. Angela Agar was in Bronze position over night after posting a 96/282.
South African Tobie De Wet led the field in the Juniors on his impressive 99/293 as well as A Class. Tom Illingworth was close behind on 99/290. With C Woolley trying hard to catch them with 98/287. J Wilkinson led the field of six Colts on 99/292. Northern Ireland’s A Graham and Yorkshires Robert Illingworth were hot on his heels both posting a 98/283.
64 Veterans battled it out with G Seabourne coming out top on 97/289, closely followed by Northern Ireland’s J Montgormery on 97/288. E Davies and PF Hughes were left tying on 3rd place after both posting a 99/286.
Everyone returned for a second day of shooting bright eyed and bushy tailed eager to take on the over night leaders. However John Stafford was not to be rocked off the top spot putting in another 100/297 with his total score being 200/593, Well Shot!
Paul Chaplow’s 99/297 gave him 198/591 which meant he took AA Class honours and a Bettinsoli Shotgun. Tobie De Wet put in a very impressive 100/299 giving him 199/592 meant he was runner up overall and took A Class. Which made the trip from South Africa well worth it.
Junior Shooter Robert Illingworth showed the seniors how it was done by handing in a 99/292 leaving him with 196/575 to take honours in B Class and claiming his Bettinsoli Shotgun. Thomas Atienza fought off competition to remain first in C Class. After putting in 99/292 finishing on 196/576 to earn himself a Bettinsoli.
Emma Wheelldon took ladies high gun after posting a 99/294 leaving a total of 196/578, defeating Andrea Swatts who finished second on 193/569. Angela Agar held on to third place after another day consistent shooting, this left her on 192/562
Tobie De Wet’s impressive display of shooting also meant he claimed Junior High Gun. With C Woolley moving up to Silver position after putting in a 99/292 totalling 197/579. Tom Illingworth had to settle for Bronze. Yorkshires Robert Illingworth also claimed high gun in Colts along with his B Class success. Jack Wilkinson having to settle for silver after posting 96/282 finishing on 574.
EL Davies was the eventual winner of the veterans after his 99/293 on Sunday left him ahead on 198/579. A Whiting got silver with his 575 narrowly defeating J Montgormery on 574.
Phillip Unwin from RUAG Ammotec presented the prizes to the well worthy winners. Thanked everyone for coming especially those who had travelled a long distance, the staff & Henry family for there hard work over the weekend in keeping Bywell’s impeccable standards up. Hoped to see everyone again next year.
